Pray

READ: Hebrews 4:16

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Where do you have confidence? For me, I feel the most confident when Brandee and I are sitting on the couch after we put both the girls to bed at the end of the day. That’s where we talk about our day, share the most secret, intimate details of what we’ve been feeling, thinking, enjoying, or mourning that day. It’s there I feel I can be most myself, relax, and get recharged to tackle the issues that I’ll have to face in the days to come.

Did you know that’s what Prayer is? I love what the author of Hebrews writes, that we can approach God’s throne with confidence. Wherever you may be in life, prayer brings us not just into the throne room, but to his couch. He’s inviting you to sit with him, to share your life with him, to know and be known by him, to vent, to decompress, to rest, to rage, to recharge, and to ask for help.

Prayer isn’t a program. It’s the core of our relationship with God. Show me someone who doesn’t pray, and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t have a relationship with the God of the universe. If I’m honest, that’s really convicting for me, because I have to own the fact that I’m still very much a newbie when it comes to being deeply connected to the Lord like that. But I long for it, desperately.

Do you?

This week, I challenge you to pray. Go sit at your desk (or kitchen table, in my case) when you know no one will disturb you.

  • Start by acknowledging who God is. “God you are _____________.”
  • Then, tell him where you’ve fallen short: “and God, I confess that I’ve _____________.”
  • Take time to thank him: “I thank you God for ______________.”
  • And finally tell him what you (and others) need: “Lord, please _____________.”

Schedule a little quiet space this week and approach God’s throne confident that He’s inviting you to sit with him and talk with him! Rest and be known.
