GENEROUS GOD, GENEROUS CHURCH

At The Well we have been going through the book of Acts, and have looked at how the Holy Spirit empowers the church for Jesus’ mission. We see immediately that the early church in Jerusalem was marked by radical generosity.

Luke tells us that “no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common” (Acts 4:32), and that there “was not a needy person among them” because people would sell their stuff to give to the church to meet the needs of the poor (Acts 4:34-35). One of the pastors of the church in Jerusalem was James, the brother of Jesus, who said that,

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). 

What’s amazing is that no one forced people to do this. This church was so transformed by the grace of God, and His generosity toward them in Christ, that they were happy to sell even their houses to give to the church and care for the poor. The generosity of the church was a reflection of the generosity of God, who sent Jesus to pay our sin debt, credit us with his righteousness, give us the free gift of eternal life through faith, and provide for all our needs. Jesus is the greatest gift, and we are loved by a supremely generous God!

ORPHANS AND WIDOWS IN TANZANIA

This summer we are sending the Myer family to Tanzania to be full-time, church-planting missionaries to the Zaramo people. They will be living on the premises of Kulea Childcare Villages. Kulea’s model for caring for some of the 3 million orphans in Tanzania is an environment where “children are raised in a home setting where a widow, trained as a house mother, will care for up to 8 children in one home”.

Last night at The Well, James Myer shared the need with us for people to sponsor these kids. By God’s grace, our young adult community is responding to God’s call to care for widows and orphans, and embrace the radical generosity of the early church that we see in Acts by sponsoring children through Kulea.

$35 per month is the cost. Let’s care for these kids.

We are getting creative with how to come up with the cash. Cancel cable and Netflix and settle for free stuff on Hulu. Give up going out to eat once a week. Buy the cheap coffee every morning instead of the fancy stuff. Sell stuff like the church in Acts did.
