We are so excited to introduce to you our newest pastor, Don Myer, who will soon be joining the staff at WBCC! Don will be overseeing Community Groups, WB Kids, and Global Missions. Check out our interview with him below to learn more about him, his family, and future role at WBCC.

When did you begin your personal relationship with Jesus?

I became a follower of Jesus at the age of 19. After the unexpected death of a very close friend of mine, I began to ask questions about life, death and eternity. While living in Omaha, Nebraska a faithful Christian man shared the gospel with me at work. He not only pointed me to a personal faith in Christ, he also invested 2 1/2 more years discipling me so that I might grow in my faith. The forgiveness of sin and a home in heaven have been the bookends to my spiritual journey for the last 40 years.

Tell us about your previous ministry experience.

Serving the Lord, in some capacity, has been a part of my walk with God since coming to faith in Jesus. But after I completed my college and seminary preparations, I began serving as a senior pastor in 1984. Together, Gala and I have served in four churches these past 30 years (2 in Nebraska, 1 in Minnesota and 1 in Kansas). As the senior pastor, there is a sense that one becomes a “jack of all trades and master of none”. But preaching and teaching the Word of God has been a highlight for me. Discipling new believers and building up the people of God in a small group setting is where I experience my greatest joy.

Tell us about your family.

First, there is my wife, Gala. Gala is a rancher’s daughter from the Sandhills of Nebraska. She grew up in a strong Christian home where God was honored and ministry for Jesus Christ taken seriously. She has 3 other siblings, two of which served as missionaries in Japan and South Africa. She IS the perfect pastor’s wife!

Gala and I have been blessed with four children; Judy, James, John and Jenna. There really isn’t enough space for me to tell you what they mean to me.

  • Judy (31) is married to a wonderful man, Ernesto Andujar. They live in Plano, TX and have two children, Jaelah and Noel.
  • James (28) and Endurance Myer you know well. They with their son Moses are seeking to reach the unreached in Tanzania, Africa.
  • John (26) lives in Lake Wales, FL. He has a degree in Cross Cultural Ministry and is presently serving at Warner University as a Resident Director. Oh by the way, HE IS SINGLE!
  • Jenna (24) is our caboose! She is fluent in Spanish and is finishing up a nursing degree in the Fall. On May 23rd she will become Mrs. Grant Herrington.

The Lord has been very good to us as a family. I hear all kinds of stories about children who grow up in a minister’s home. No family is not without its ups and downs but I am being very sincere when I say that my children have made me very proud. They and their spouses are not only my peers in life and faith, they have become my examples. I am extremely blessed.

What will your role be on staff at WBCC?

I will wear a number of hats at WBCC. It will range from overseeing the Children’s Ministry every Sunday morning during worship, to providing leadership to the Community Groups that meet during the week, to working alongside James as we develop WBCC’s Global Missions Ministry.

Each of these roles brings a level of excitement to me.

  • Influencing our children in their personal faith with Jesus is extremely important in this age we live in.
  • Working in the area of leadership development and discipleship has been my passion for the last 30 years. Our roots need to go down deep if God would use us to bear much fruit.
  • World Missions! A Church that is not serious about reaching the unreached is just playing games and not taking Jesus very seriously.

What excites you the most about moving to Austin, TX and being a part of WBCC?

I’m not going to lie; being closer to my children and grandchildren is pretty high on the excitement scale. I always dreamed that my children would join me in ministry one day. That didn’t happen in the way I thought it would. But by coming to WBCC God is pleased to have me join one of my son’s in his life and ministry. There is no greater joy than this!

What is your heart and hope for WBCC?

What excites me the most is the area of discipleship. Since my early days as a Christian, my involvement with the Navigator Ministry has been a passion in me. Being used by God to reach the unreached, ground them in their faith and watch them become fruitful servants for His eternal kingdom; this is the food that creates life within me.

My dream is to come alongside the Elders and Staff at WBCC and strengthen the men in their faith. As the years unfold, it is my dream to disciple men, who will in turn disciple other men. 2 Timothy 2:2 says, “The things you have learned from me in the presence of many witness, these entrust to faithful men you will be able to teach others also”.

This is the mandate of the church if we are to fulfill God’s calling in us. As we build the men, we strengthen the marriages and we raise our families for the glory of God. It is from this pool we build the church and reach the world for Christ.

My life verse is Colossians 1:28-29, “We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me”. It is this work that I long for God to do in and through my life at WBCC.

What do you and Gala like to do for fun?

Gala and I are very relational, so we like to spend time with people of all ages. We enjoy different restaurants, going to movies and doing lots of things together. I enjoy hunting, fishing and all kinds of sports. Gala often comes along, just to hang out. I know this will sound cheesy, but we love the church. Whatever is happening in the lives of the family of God is fun for us.

We can’t wait for you to meet Don! We are excited about all he and Gala will bring to our family here at Wells Branch Community Church.
