“Rescue those who are being taken away to death;
hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
If you say, Behold, we did not know this,
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it,
and will he not repay man according to his work?”
(Proverbs 24:11-12)

This week at The Well we began a 3-week series exploring what God’s word says about the sanctity of human life, even unborn life in the womb, and the call on God’s people to “rescue those who are being taken away to death. We live in a culture that by and large sees the unborn as either not-human, or less-valuable-than-other-humans, and responds by saying, because you are weak and small, you are disposable. This is so far from God’s heart, and so far from the message of the gospel.

THE IMAGE OF GOD AND ABORTION

Every human life is made equally in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27), with inherent worth and value, and a divine purpose to enjoy life by glorifying the God who created us. From the moment of conception, when the X chromosome of the egg is fused with the X or Y chromosome of the sperm, we are biologically male or female human beings and God begins knitting us together in the womb, in his image and after his likeness (Ps. 139:13, Gen. 1:26-27). To get an abortion is an assault against the image of God in man, and therefore an assault against God himself. Abortion is a sinful, murderous attack against God’s person-forming work in the womb.

THE GOSPEL AND OUR RESPONSE 

There is so much good news though. God forgives murderers. Jesus saves sinners. There is no sin so dark that the blood of Jesus can’t wash it away. There is infinite grace available in Jesus Christ, and there is hope for those who have gotten abortions; to be forgiven, redeemed, and given a new life in Christ. Even more, there is hope for God’s people to be able to push back darkness in our culture and stand up for the unborn. To literally “rescue those who are being taken away to death” (Pr. 24:11). Jesus Christ has rescued us from death, and we are called to be like him by rescuing others from death. We do that by sharing the hope of the gospel and lovingly walking alongside those who have had abortions, and by raising our voices to protect those who have no voice. Here’s how you can start to do that…

1. PRAY AND FAST

Join us on September 23rd to November 1st, we will be praying and fasting together with others in the 40 Days for Life campaign. We will pray for the unborn to be saved, and for our nation’s leaders to bring an end to the approval of abortion (1 Tim. 2:1-4). We will stand together outside of abortion facilities to pray for the men and women who go in, and for the employees there, and show the love and grace of God.

2. JOIN A MOVEMENT

Get involved with Texas Alliance for Life, an organization committed to “protecting the fundamental right to life of all innocent human beings and to promoting respect for their value and dignity from the moment of conception until natural death”. There is a benefit dinner coming up on October 13th that would be a great way to jump in. You can sign up here to volunteer and be a part of this movement.

3. VOTE FOR LIFE

Vote for pro-life candidates. The way our nation is set up, every young adult has an opportunity to shape the laws of our land concerning the unborn. Your vote can save lives and change the trajectory of our culture. There are people running for president who want abortions to be legal throughout all 9 months of pregnancy, and there are people who want to end abortion.
